Lawyers for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says a request that the county pay $7.3 million in attorney fees for the other side in a racial profiling case is outrageous.
The request was filed by attorneys whose clients won a ruling by a judge that the sheriff's office and Arpaio singled out Latinos and that deputies reasonably prolonged detentions.
The motion making the request cited six years of litigation since the case was filed in 2007, including two years of pretrial fact-finding and a seven-day trial.
Arpaio's lawyers responded in a filing that the request appears "outrageous, unreasonable, excessive, redundant and other unnecessary."
The judge ordered the appointment of an independent monitor and a community advisory board to ensure compliance with constitutional requirements.
