Sheriff Joe Arpaio: Judge delays ruling in racial profiling case

PHOENIX - A federal judge has delayed a ruling in the racial profiling case against Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office but is indicating that a court-appointed monitor will almost certainly be assigned to the agency.

U.S. District Judge Murray Snow found in May that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office singled out Latinos and deputies unreasonably prolonged detentions, marking the first finding by a court that the agency engages in racial profiling.

Arpaio's office is appealing.

During a hearing Friday in Phoenix, attorneys on both sides remained at odds over several key remedies, including the appointment of a monitor to make sure the agency adheres to constitutional requirements. Arpaio's office also is objecting to having deputies provide a reason for pulling over a vehicle before approaching the driver.

A final ruling is expected by mid-September.
