PHOENIX - Deputies and inmates had their hands full Friday after a broken pipe flooded the 4th Avenue Jail in downtown Phoenix.
Maricopa County Sheriff's officials said the pipe broke on the 3rd floor and leaked down two floors to the central intake area.
MCSO spokesman Brandon Jones said preliminary information indicates the break may have been inadvertently caused by a detention officer.
Jones said fifty inmates had to be moved to Tent City so the jail could be cleaned.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said most of the clean up was done by the inmates themselves.
Jones said the detention officer has been on the job for less than a year and is on paid administrative leave while deputies investigate.
Authorities say criminal charges against him are unlikely because intent to damage the building is not apparent.
Damage estimates to the jail are unavailable at this time.
