Sandy update: Phoenix Sky Harbor flights affected by superstorm

PHOENIX - Dozens of flights headed to the East Coast from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport have been delayed or canceled because of Hurricane Sandy.

An airport spokesperson says as of Tuesday afternoon there are between 30 and 40 flight cancelations to the DC area, New York, Boston, Baltimore, and the Philadelphia area.

Sky Harbor's two major carriers -- US Airways and Southwest -- canceled at least 30 departures between them Monday. Combined, the airlines offer more than 400 daily flights from Phoenix.

Sky Harbor officials tell ABC15 they expect to resume service to most of the areas, except New York City, some time Wednesday.

Tempe-based US Airways says it has canceled all Tuesday flights to and from 22 East Coast airports for a second day. The airports include Philadelphia, Boston, New York and Washington, D.C.

The Arizona Republic says American Airlines and American Eagle have suspended operations at nine East Coast airports until midday Wednesday.
