Routine doctor appointment turns to emergency quadruple-bypass surgery for Valley woman

PHOENIX - A routine trip to the cardiologist turned into a life-threatening 24 hours for Valley resident Connie Thomas.

After looking over Connie's EKG, the doctor immediately noticed that something was seriously wrong. Fearing an immediate heart attack he rushed her to the hospital.

"I was in total disbelief. I could not believe that that was happening to me. I was only 39 years old," said Thomas.

Unfortunately, there is a strong history of heart disease in Connie's family.  This has increased her chances of having heart problems herself.

Connie underwent emergency quadruple-bypass surgery. The surgery was a success.

Since the surgery, Connie has focused on eating healthy and exercising for a couple of hours a day.

The Thomas family has also gotten very involved with the American Heart Association in hopes to help spread awareness of heart disease.

One of Connie's goals is to stress the importance of getting checked out if you know heart disease is present in your family.
