Man surrenders after dispute ends in deadly shooting

PHOENIX - Police say a barricade situation in East Phoenix has ended with one man dead and another in custody.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute between two neighbors near 52nd Street and Thomas Road.

Police say 41-year-old Nicholas Oakes admitted to shooting the other man multiple times. He then refused to come out his home, according to Martos.

Martos said the suspect was believed to be in the home by himself. He surrendered several hours later.

The surrounding area had been evacuated, and at one point nearby schools were temporarily put on lockdown.

Martos said the victim was taken to the hospital where he died.

Oakes is facing a charge of first-degree murder.
