Victim ID'd in deadly Phoenix hit and run

PHOENIX, AZ - A man is in jail after a deadly hit and run in Phoenix Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened near 15th Avenue and Buckeye around 1:00 p.m.

Sergeant Trent Crump said a Dodge Charger was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on west Pima Road when it ran through the intersection of south 13th Avenue and collided with a Saturn, which was traveling northbound.

The driver of the Dodge fled on foot and ran to a relative's house nearby.

Crump said a witness to the crash followed the driver and told police where he was hiding.

The driver was taken into custody by officers. Police later determined the man was under the influence of marijuana.

The driver of the Saturn was wearing her seatbelt, but died as a result of her injuries. The driver of the Dodge sustained minor injuries and required no medical treatment.

He was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on one count of manslaughter, one count of leaving the scene of a fatal traffic collision and one count of aggravated DUI.
