Terminal 4 ticket counter cleared, police investigating after 'suspicious item' found at Sky Harbor

PHOENIX - A portion of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was evacuated Monday afternoon while police investigated a suspicious item.

Julie Rodriguez, spokeswoman for Phoenix Sky Harbor, said the ticket counter area of Terminal 4 had been cleared of all customers and employees while police investigated a "possible suspicious item."

Rodriguez said airport operations were back to normal shortly after 1 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Police said the suspicious item turned out to be a discarded cooler with an ice pack on the inside. A passenger discarded it after they were not allowed to bring it on the plane.

A concerned passenger alerted authorities, said police. A bomb dog was called and "hit" the trash can, which likely was the chemicals inside the ice pack, said police.

Terminal 4 serves US Airways, Southwest Airlines, Aeromexico, Air Canada, AirTran, british Airways and WestJet.

Airport officials encouraged those traveling or picking up passengers to check the flight's status with the airline before heading to the airport.
