Police arrest suspect in Phoenix bar hammer attack

PHOENIX - Authorities have arrested a man accused of attacking another man with a hammer at a Phoenix bar early Wednesday.

According to Phoenix police, officers responded to the Ice Pics bar near 32nd Street and McDowell Road in response to an aggravated assault.

When they arrived, the 38-year-old victim said he’d been in the rear patio area of the bar when he was confronted by the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Matthew Eugene Alcala.

The victim reportedly told Alcala he was not supposed to be on the property and Alcala then asked the victim for food and money.

Police say the victim then tried to force Alcala off the property and Alcala allegedly struck the victim on the head with a hammer before fleeing the area.

Police were unable to find Alcala but the victim and others in the bar told officers they believed they’d seen him in the bar and in the area before.

Around 4 p.m. on the same day the suspect returned to the bar and police were called.

Officers were able to identify Alcala, though he had fled again.

Alcala was identified by the victim in a photo lineup and around 8:30 p.m. officers found Alcala near 31st Street and McDowell Road.

He was arrested and booked into jail on one count of aggravated assault.

Police say the victim was treated at the hospital for a suspected skull fracture and is expected to recover.
