Suspect in custody after struggle with officer

PHOENIX - A Phoenix freeway ramp was blocked for about an hour during a police incident Wednesday morning.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said a man was taken into custody for trespassing at Walmart and was in the back of the patrol car when he acted like he had passed out.

The officer stopped the vehicle at the off ramp at Glendale Avenue along southbound State Route 51 to check on the man.

The man jumped at the officer and started to struggle with him in an attempt to get away.

Thompson said at one point the man tried to grab the officer's weapon but was unsuccessful.

The officer called for backup and the suspect was taken back into custody.

The westbound lanes on the off ramp at Glendale Avenue were blocked for about 45 minutes. There were approximately a dozen patrol cars at the scene at one point.

The suspect was taken to the hospital as a precaution, Thompson said.

No officers were hurt during the altercation, according to Thompson.

Thompson said the man had said he'd taken methamphetamine earlier.
