PHOENIX - A naked man who took heroin and claimed he was Satan scuffled with two Phoenix police officers before he was fatally shot, authorities said Friday.
Phoenix police identified the man as Raul Altimirano Suarez Jr., 26, and said he was declared dead at the scene Thursday afternoon.
Officers were called to an east Phoenix home by a man who said his son was acting erratically. The man told police his son had jumped over a fence while naked and tried to enter the neighbor's home by breaking a window with a shovel.
Police said Suarez "had a crazed look in his eyes" and told a sergeant that he had taken heroin and another drug.
Suarez reached for the 46-year-old sergeant's gun and Taser but the officer swatted his hand away, police said.
A 42-year-old police officer arrived on the scene and she and the male sergeant tried to handcuff Suarez. That started a scuffle that left both police officers bruised, said Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a police spokesman.
A police report said Suarez told the officers "he was Satan and Jesus Christ and that he was going to kill them. He also said `You might as well shoot me now.' Both the sergeant and the officer deployed their Tasers, but they had no effect on Suarez."
Police said the sergeant was backed into the corner of a room and fired one shot at Suarez as he came at the officer.
Both officers suffered minor injuries from being kicked and struck by Suarez and the sergeant, a 21-year veteran, was taken to a hospital for treatment, Thompson said.
