Phoenix Valley Metro transit bus and light rail services see record-breaking increase in passengers

PHOENIX - Phoenix transit users have broken the record for the highest-ever recorded number of riders since spring 2009.

According to Valley Metro, there were 7,080,564 monthly boardings among the Valley Metro Bus and Lightrail. That number breaks the record of 6,649,206 passengers in April 2009.

The highest number of riders on one given day occurred on Oct. 18, the day of the ASU vs. Oregon football game, when more than 65,000 riders hopped aboard Phoenix transit.

October also had the highest Saturday ridership, according to Valley Metro.

The 10 percent increase from one year ago shows that more Valley residents and visitors are utilizing Phoenix transit.

The first portion of the Valley Metro Light Rail opened in December 2008. By 2032, Valley Metro is expecting six route extensions which will make a 57-mile light rail system.
