Forgery suspect involved in carjacking, police chase

PHOENIX - A man is under arrest after leading police on a high speed pursuit up and down the I-17 Tuesday night.

Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes said the incident started when the suspect tried to forge a check at a check cashing business near 19th Avenue and Bell Road.

When police arrived on scene, the man attempted to carjack a truck with a woman and her two young children inside.

Authorities said officers saw the man point a gun at the woman. That is when police opened fire on the suspect.

Police were able to get the woman and her children out of the truck at which point the suspect got in the vehicle and took off.

Holmes said the suspect drove up and down I-17 before ending up at a Circle K at 19th Avenue and Cactus Road.

Authorities said the suspect tried to run over several people in the parking lot before he ran the stolen truck into the side of the store.

Police surrounded the truck and immediately took the man into custody.

Holmes said he does not believe the suspect fired any shots at police. No officers or witnesses were injured during the incident.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The suspect's name has not yet been released.
