Phoenix police identify robbery suspect shot, killed by armored car guard

PHOENIX - Police have identified a man shot and killed while he and another man allegedly tried to rob an armored car last Friday.

Lonnie D. Smith, 34, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after he was shot by an armed guard outside a Wells Fargo bank at Glendale Avenue and 7th Street, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos.

Martos said Smith and another armed man approached the guards as they were working at an ATM.

They tried to rob the guards but one shot Smith. The other man fled and has not been located.

Police don’t know if the second suspect left the scene armed, but officers found a rifle under a car at the scene.
