Phoenix police bust prostitution ring with cabbies

PHOENIX - Police say they've broken up a sophisticated prostitution ring in Phoenix that used taxi drivers.

Authorities say the ring organizers didn't operate using a business name. They focused on recruiting illegal immigrants as young as 19 to work as prostitutes and dispatched them around the Phoenix metropolitan area using cabbies.

The Arizona Republic says the organization marketed itself by buying advertisements in Spanish language magazines and distributing business cards to potential clients.

Profits were shared between the women and ring organizers, with cab drivers collecting and returning money to a main location.

Police say seven women and two men have been were arrested so far in the case after a yearlong investigation. More arrests could be forthcoming.

All the women arrested were charged with prostitution. No names were released.
