PHOENIX - A Phoenix man heard a car crash into his neighbor's pool early Saturday morning and jumped into the murky water to rescue the woman who was trapped.
"I was going to die trying," Staff Sgt. Chance Stahl told ABC15 outside his home. "We don't leave anyone behind."
Phoenix firefighters said the woman was unconscious when paramedics rushed her to the hospital.
Stahl is now trying to find out the name of the hospital in which she's recovering so he can see for himself how she is doing.
"I actually had to go under water to get her out," he said. "That thing was sinking quick."
The crash happened around 3 a.m. Saturday along Northern and 39th avenues.
Stahl said that he has combat medic training and is often "in the right place, at the right time."
The active soldier told ABC15 that he is currently unemployed and seeking work in the security or construction field.
