Phoenix man accused of whipping 11-year-old son

PHOENIX - A Phoenix man is accused of whipping his 11-year-old son and putting hot peppers in the boy's eyes.

Authorities say the suspect was released on bond Friday after an initial court appearance for three felony counts of child abuse.

He was released pending a June 5 status conference and June 9 preliminary hearing.

He does not have an attorney and one will be appointed for him.

The 38-year-old was arrested Thursday by Phoenix police.

Court documents show the boy told a school counselor his father whipped him with a belt and an extension cord. The boy said his dad would heat hot peppers and water before putting the mixture in his eyes.

Authorities say the boy had scars on his back, shoulders and chest consistent with a whipping.
