PHOENIX - Several hundred guns were dropped off at Phoenix's third gun buyback event held Saturday.
Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department said an estimated 937 guns were collected in just one day.
The buyback program's first two events, on May 4 and 11, were a big success—officers collected almost 1,000 firearms between the two dates.
With all three gun buyback events completed, Martos said the department collected approximately 1,916 guns total.
An anonymous donor funded the first two events with a $100,000 contribution, but those two events used up all of those funds. Luckily, another anonymous donor gave $100,000 to the program to extend its life.
A large portion of the event money went toward gift cards that were given out to those who turned in their unused and unwanted firearms.
The Phoenix Police Department, Arizonans for Gun Safety and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton expressed their gratitude to the anonymous donor in a press release, without whom they said the event wouldn't have been possible.
