Phoenix Fire: 6-month-old killed in Phoenix apartment fire; cause under investigation

PHOENIX - A child has died after an apartment caught fire Monday in Phoenix, according to fire officials.

Phoenix Fire Captain Jonathan Jacobs said a 6-month-old has died after an apartment caught fire near 24th Street and McDowell Road.

Jacobs said an off-duty firefighter noticed smoke coming from the unit at the McDowell East Apartments, called 911 and tried to help.

He said the 6-month-old was in a backroom of the apartment, while mom and grandma were toward the front of the apartment when the fire broke out.

The mother and grandma were able to get three other children out of the home, however, were unable to reach the infant due to heavy fire and smoke, he said. By the time fire crews controlled the flames and were able to reach the child, the boy had already died.

Jacobs said the fire started on the second story. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
