Phoenix buyback event trades guns for groceries

PHOENIX - Citizens who traded in their guns Saturday in Phoenix got a gift card to local grocery stores for up to $200.

The first of three gun buyback events organized by the City of Phoenix took place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three local churches.

Anyone who brought in their unwanted guns received a gift card to be used at Bashas', Food City and AJ's Fine Foods.

Those exchanging handguns, shotguns or rifles got a $100 gift card per weapon. Assault rifles earned a $200 gift card per gun.

Police were asking anyone who attended to practice firearm safety by bringing unloaded firearms, placing them in a trunk or back seat and telling officers where the weapons are. No one should hand firearms to officers on arrival, according to a press release.

According to the Phoenix Gun Buyback website , all firearms collected during the gun buyback will be destroyed in accordance with Arizona Law. If the weapon is deemed to be stolen, it will be returned to its rightful owner.

There will be two more buyback events held on May 11 and May 18.
