Petco offers free seminars to help pet parents during July 4 fireworks

PHOENIX - Loud sounds and colorful sparks light up the sky on Fourth of July, but where is Fido? Chances are he’s feeling exhausted and anxious while you enjoy the fireworks.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, July 5 is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters because animals flee out of fear during July 4 fireworks.

Dogs are sensitive to sound, and the loud sounds reverberating through the sky from fireworks can send them running away.

To help pet owners learn about the dangers and prevention of pets and fireworks, Petco will be hosting free calming and anxiety seminars for owners and their pets on June 28-29 at various Phoenix locations. All seminars will begin at 2 pm and will outline how to recognize a dog’s stress signals, teach mental and physical exercises to keep them calm, as well as techniques to help animals settle down.

Here’s a list of tips to follow when prepping your pet for Fourth of July celebrations:

1 – Keep an updated ID on all pets, including indoor cats.

2 – Avoid taking pets to a fireworks show, instead leave them in a secure and quiet place at home.

3 – If a dog has to be present during fireworks, keep them on a leash and harness. When spooked, they can slip out of their collar.

4 – Avoid leaving pets outside unattended.
