PHOENIX - The westbound lanes of the I-10 were closed near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Saturday night following a deadly pedestrian accident.
In a Sunday morning update, the Department of Public Safety said it received a report around 10 p.m. of a vehicle that hit a pedestrian on the I-10 near 40th Street.
The pedestrian later passed away at the hospital from their injuries.
The Department of Public Safety said officials are unsure as to why the pedestrian was in the roadway and have not released an identity.
Traffic was diverted onto SR-143 following the incident. Heavy traffic was reported in the area due to the lane restrictions and detours.
The Arizona Department of Transportation reported the lanes were reopened early Sunday morning.
