PHOENIX - Phoenix police say a man was taken into custody Thursday night in connection with an aggravated assault on a Department of Public Safety officer.
Authorities said Rafael Reyna III, 35, was arrested after a barricade situation near 37th Street and Thomas Road.
Police said Reyna "has a history of violence towards law enforcement" and is wanted for allegedly assaulting the DPS officer after he was pulled over New Year's Day along the US 60 near Extension Road for suspicion of driving under the influence.
Authorities said, as Reyna was being arrested by the DPS officer, he turned around and hit the officer numerous times in the face and then fled the scene in his vehicle.
Police said they were able to catch Rayna because he was involved in a stabbing Thursday morning.
The stabbing victim called police and identified Rayna as the man who attacked him.
Officials said the DPS officer was transported to a local hospital and has since been released to recover at home.
