PHOENIX - Police have arrested a man who admitted to causing burns and shaking an 8-month-old baby in Phoenix.
According to Phoenix police spokesperson James Holmes, police were called to the Palomino Pointe Apartments near 29th Street and Greenway Road on Wednesday in response to a child not breathing.
Phoenix police say the 8-month-old girl was rushed to the hospital around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning after she was found in distress.
The infant was pronounced dead shortly after arriving to the hospital, Holmes said.
According to Holmes, after being examined by doctors at the hospital it was revealed that the baby had significant trauma to her body, including burns.
Phoenix police were able to conduct interviews with the occupants of the home and obtain a search warrant.
During the interview process, the boyfriend of the mother of the victim 21-year-old Adrian Ponce, admitted to causing the burns and shaking the child.
Ponce has been booked into jail on 8 counts of child abuse and other related charges, Holmes said.
An autopsy is planned for the child. The cause of death has yet to be determined.
Ponce is not the natural father of the child.
