PD: Jeffery Ruiz killed while fleeing Phoenix police

PHOENIX - Authorities say a 26-year-old man is dead after crashing his car while trying to flee from police Tuesday night.

Phoenix police spokesman Tommy Thompson said the incident started around 10 p.m. when officers stopped a 2005 Cadillac near 45th Street and McDowell Road.

Thompson said during the stop, officers discovered both the driver and his passenger, Jeffery Ruiz, had warrants for their arrests.

Authorities said Ruiz would not comply with the officer's commands, pushed the driver out of the car and got behind the wheel.

Thompson said Ruiz then sped off eastbound on McDowell.

Officers said the vehicle got quite a distance from officers before they could get close enough to stop it.

Police eventually found the Cadillac had driven off the roadway near 58th Street and McDowell Road.

Thompson said Ruiz was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The other person in the vehicle is not being identified at this time.
