PHOENIX - Phoenix police identified the driver in a deadly rollover Monday that knocked down power lines and canceled classes at a nearby elementary school.
Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department said the one-vehicle collision occurred around 1 a.m. near 30th Street and McDowell Road.
According to Martos, police believe the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, about 85 to 90 miles per hour.
The vehicle then went left of center and hit a power pole and fire hydrant before rolling several times and landing on a retaining wall at Creighton Elementary School, Martos said.
The driver has been identified as 31-year-old Yusef Rashid Ahmad Watkins-Hill. He was reportedly found deceased under the vehicle.
Officers restricted the roadway from 26th Street to 30th Street on McDowell Road.
Utility crews were on site, and access to Creighton Elementary were restricted until the work was completed.
School officials said classes at Creighton Elementary were canceled . No other schools in the district were affected.
