PD: Burglary suspect dies after setting Phoenix home on fire

PHOENIX - A suspected burglar is dead after he set fire to a home in which he was hiding on Saturday, authorities said.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said neighbors called 911 to report a burglary in progress and when officers arrived they were told the suspect was hiding in the attic of a house next to the one he had burglarized, near 61st Avenue and Thomas Road.

Officers cleared the residents out of that house and neighboring homes, Thompson said.

As officers went into the home with the suspect, the suspect apparently started a fire.

The fire department was unable to save the home and the suspect was found dead inside.
