PHOENIX - Police say an officer has shot and killed a man who was walking through a central Phoenix neighborhood carrying a gun and firing shots.
Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said they are not sure what the man was firing shots at.
Several calls were made to 911 around 5:30 p.m. about someone firing shots in the neighborhood near 10th and Van Buren streets.
Martos said when officers arrived they talked with the suspect who would not put down the weapon.
The man then pointed the gun at the officers and one officer fired his weapon.
The man, described only as in his mid-20s, ran from the officers and was found dead in someone's yard around the corner.
Neighbors were shocked at all of the commotion.
"It's kind of nerve wracking to know that I'm only four or five blocks away from here, and if I had come a minute later, maybe I was caught in the crossfire or someone would try to get my bike to get away," Dan Wallace said.
Another officer was bitten by a police K9 and suffered a minor injury, according to Martos.
The incident is under investigation.
