New Walmart opens at Metrocenter Mall

PHOENIX - A brand new Walmart just opened in the Valley.

The Walmart at Metrocenter Mall open the doors on Wednesday morning. 

The 148,000 square foot store was built from the ground up and on the store of the former Broadway building, which has been vacant since 2006.

When Metrocenter Mall first opened in 173 was the largest indoor shopping mall in America. However, the mall took a backseat after other malls started opening across the Valley. 

Movies like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure shot scenes at the shopping mall in its prime. 

City officials say new restaurants, office buildings and housing developments are also expected to go up in the area. A light rail stop will also be built new the mall. Construction for that is slated for 2019.

Walmart will host grand opening festivities all week including an ice cream truck and a Fall Festival from 5 to 9 p.m. on October 13. The festival will include free actives for all ages.
