Murdered woman identified as Bria Helpley, suspect arrested by Phoenix police

PHOENIX - Police have identified a woman killed in central Phoenix Saturday morning.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said police have arrested one suspect in the death of 26-year-old Bria Helpley.

Helpley was found near Monroe and 14th streets just before 7 a.m. Saturday.

Police did not say how Helpley died, but that the death is being treated as a homicide.

Martos said a 27-year-old man was arrested and booked into jail Saturday afternoon. His 46-year-old mother was also arrested and booked for hindering prosecution for attempting to destroy evidence,\.

Martos said the homicide was the result of an altercation between Helpley and the suspect.

After the suspect fled the scene, his mother attempted to discard evidence but was stopped by officers, Martos said.

ABC15 is not identifying the suspect and his mother as they have not yet been formally charged.
