More than 40 arrested in Phoenix-area drug bust

PHOENIX - Authorities have arrested more than 40 people suspected of being part of a drug organization in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Chandler police say the investigation began in early 2011 and authorities made the final arrests Thursday.

Officials suspected the drug ring focused on the distribution and sales of heroin and cocaine in the Phoenix area and in the Arizona prison system.

The Arizona Republic says authorities found more than 32 pounds of heroin and five pounds of cocaine after they served arrest warrants at homes.

Officials suspect the organization to be a major supplier of illegal narcotics.

The estimated street value of the drugs seized was $1.75 million and authorities believe the narcotics originated in Mexico.
