MCSO: Scammers trying to get your money, threatening arrest

PHOENIX - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is warning about a scam that targets citizens by trying to get money to pay off outstanding ticket fines over the phone and threatening arrest.

MCSO Officer Christopher Hegstrom said the scammers are calling Valley residents claiming to be a Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy and threatening to arrest the citizen if a "Green Dot Money Pack" is not purchased.

Hegstrom says no law enforcement agency requires payment of traffic fines to be wired, or credit card information be provided over the phone to avoid arrest.

Hegstrom says if you receive a call from someone claiming to be with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and is trying to get money for unpaid fines over the phone, hang up and report the incident to your local law enforcement agency.
