PHOENIX - Authorities said two people were killed early Sunday when the vehicle they were driving in rolled over several times.
Joaquin Enriquez, spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, said a male and a female, both in their 20s, were killed after their four-door Lexus rolled over several times near 51st Avenue and Estrella near Laveen.
Sunday night, Enriquez identified the victims as Joseph Medina and Patricia Castaneda, both 26.
Authorities said the vehicle was driving north on 51st Avenue around 4 a.m. at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control. The vehicle rolled over and came to rest in front of a nearby home.
Carlos Avina's mother lives inside that home.
"She called 911 and the police told her to stay inside," Carlos said. "When they did show up, she did go outside and then they told her that they were both deceased."
Authorities said speed is a factor in the crash. They do not know if alcohol played a part in the crash.
An electrical pole was knocked over in the crash and Sunday afternoon neighbor Brittany Vansickle still didn't have power to her home.
She says the crash happening next door is pretty scary.
"It would affect anybody, especially seeing something like that. My neighbor, I was really worried about her," Vansickle said.
Avina said his mother saw the female victim's body lying outside her arcadia door. He says the sight of the scene is something his mother will take some time getting over.
"I think she's a little traumatized by seeing everything, but she's okay."
