PHOENIX - A jail inmate is dead and his cellmate is facing a murder charge, authorities say.
John Klatt, 50, was found beaten and stabbed early Saturday morning inside his jail cell at the Lower Buckeye Jail, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities say detention officers were alerted that Klatt was bleeding and not breathing around 7:10 a.m.
Detention officers and medical staff found the victim lying in a small pool of blood. Authorities say Klatt appeared to have been beaten and stabbed in the eye with a small pencil.
Efforts to save Klatt were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased in the housing unit.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio says his jail crimes investigators and homicide detectives have been working at the scene all day and will likely charge Klatt's cellmate, 20-year-old Nike Black, with murder.
Authorities say both Black and Klatt were minimum security inmates.
Klatt had been in jail since last September on sex crimes involving minors and Black was in jail on domestic violence charges.
