PHOENIX - Valley holiday shoppers may feel a little safer as the Maricopa County Sheriff's posse kicks off its 20th year of patrolling mall parking lots.
The operation was mobilized after a series of carjackings at Phoenix area malls in 1992, according to an MCSO news release.
"This program has done so much good over the years from locating lost children and stolen vehicles to traffic accident assists and shoplifting arrests," Sheriff Joe Arpaio stated.
Arpaio said the operation uses little to no taxpayer money as the posse members volunteer their services for free.
The posse will focus its attention to nine malls during the holiday season.
Arpaio will kick off the 20th anniversary Mall Posse Patrol at 5 p.m. Monday at Paradise Valley Mall.
The posse will begin to patrol that night and will continue each day until shortly after New Year.
