Man in custody after flashing gun at workers at Phoenix Filiberto's

PHOENIX - Police are looking for a suspect who flashed a gun at employees at a Filiberto's restaurant early Friday morning.

Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said the suspect went through the drive-through at the Filiberto's near 7th Street and Glendale Avenue to order food, got the food and then drove off.

The returned to the drive-through and banged on the window to get the employees attention. When the workers went to the window, the suspect waved a gun and demanded that they return his cell phone.

Martos said the suspect had never been inside the restaurant and so workers didn't have access to his phone.

The employees ran from the window and called 911.

Police spotted the suspect's vehicle and followed the driver, who crashed into a tree and ran into an apartment near Northern Avenue and 16th Street.

Martos also said it is believed the suspect may have been impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Police did find the man's cell phone on the ground near the Filiberto's drive-through.

The standoff with SWAT ended around 8:15 a.m. with the suspect waking up and surrendering to police without incident.
