Man fatally shot by Phoenix police after swinging sword at officers identified

Authorities have released the name of a man fatally shot by Phoenix police after officers say he swung a samurai sword at them.
Police announced Friday that the man was 21-year-old Jose Manuel Meza Avendano.
Avendano was shot Feb. 13 after officers encountered him while checking out a suspicious vehicle south of the state fairgrounds. They say the car was stopped on the side of a roadway with its hood raised.
Officers checked the vehicle's license plate and found it was fictitious and approached the car.
Police say the driver initially refused to get out of the vehicle, then exited carrying a sheathed sword.
They say the man removed the sword from the sheath and swung it at officers. He was shot by the officers and died at the scene.
