Man dies after car collides with light pole

PHOENIX - A 23-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning after his vehicle struck a light pole on McDowell Road near 39th Avenue.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos said witnesses had observed a Nissan Maxima heading westbound at high speed, which attempted to turn southbound onto 39th Avenue around 1 a.m.

The vehicle was unable to make the turn due to speed and struck the traffic signal light pole on the southwest corner.

Luis Fernandez, Jr. was driving the vehicle and was the only occupant. It did not appear he was wearing a seatbelt, according to Martos.

Fernandez was extracted from the vehicle and transported to an area hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.
