Man arrested after police find kids living in filthy home

PHOENIX - A man was arrested Monday after police found several children left in an "extreme state of filth" in a Phoenix home.

Police had reportedly gone to the residence near 39th Avenue and Grant Street on a welfare check. Outside the home, police heard dogs barking and smelled rotting food and feces. Police reportedly heard the sound of children inside.

When police believed no adults were at the home, they forced open the door after several minutes of knocking and trying to contact the individuals inside.

According to court documents, 26-year-old Casey Deryke was found hiding in the bedroom with the children's mother.

Deryke reportedly attempted to lie and misspell his name once police were able to contact him.

Inside several rooms of the home, including a child's bedroom, rotting food and feces were found.

Police also noticed that there was very little food in the refrigerator and what was left was unsafe to eat.

Child Protective Services says they are going to be continuing their own investigation and the children are not allowed to stay at the residence.

Court documents show that three children and the children's mother lived at the home with Deryke.

Deryke is facing charges related to child abuse and false reporting.
