Man accused of sexually assaulting 8-year-old girl at Phoenix apartment complex

PHOENIX - A Valley man is behind bars after allegedly assaulting an 8-year-old girl at a Phoenix apartment complex.

Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes said the incident happened Monday afternoon near Buckeye Road and 11th Avenue.

Holmes said when officers arrived on scene, a witness told police she was looking out her kitchen window when she saw something unusual going on behind a pillar in the complex.

She told police she saw the suspect step out from the pillar while holding the girl off the ground by her shorts.

Police said she saw the man throw the girl to the ground and get on top of her. She ran outside and told the man to stop at which point he fled the scene.

Holmes said neighbors in the complex saw the man run away and pointed officers in his direction.

Authorities were able to locate and capture the suspect nearby. The man was positively identified by witnesses and arrested by police.

Holmes said the suspect admitted to detectives he touched the victim and intended to have sex with her.

The suspect was booked into jail and is charged with kidnapping, sexual abuse and molestation of a child.
