A March 30 trial has been set for a 17-year-old boy accused of killing a Maricopa County jail officer who authorities say was randomly targeted when he was shot in his driveway.

The boy has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault and drive-by-shooting in the August 2013 death of detention officer Jorge Vargas.

The 27-year-old officer was attacked while working on his car outside his home.

Investigators don't know what exactly happened in the driveway before Vargas was shot.

The boy was identified as Leonard Moreno. He was 15 when he was charged as an adult.

Vargas worked for the sheriff's Custody Support Bureau in a jail food factory.
