PHOENIX - A 15-year-old boy has pleaded not guilty in the killing of a Maricopa County detention officer who authorities say apparently was targeted at random when he was shot in his own driveway.
A Superior Court spokeswoman says Leonard Culling Moreno entered the plea Wednesday in the shooting of the 27-year-old officer, Jorge Vargas.
The 15-year-old is charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault and drive-by-shooting.
Vargas was attacked Aug. 8 at 4 a.m. while working on his car outside his home. He was wearing his uniform that identified him as a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office employee.
Moreno's next court date is set for Nov. 7 at 8:15 a.m.
