Landrum Taylor drops Secretary of State bid

PHOENIX - State Sen. Leah Landrum Taylor is dropping her bid for the Democratic party nomination for Secretary of State.

Landrum Taylor formally announced she was running in December but dropped out Monday. She said she instead wants to focus on reforming the state's child welfare system.

Landrum Taylor was the minority leader in the Senate before being ousted by fellow Democrats in favor of Sen. Anna Tovar in October.

The announcement comes just days after former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard said he would run for the office.

Republicans in the race include state Sen. Michele Reagan, Rep. Justin Pierce and investor Wil Cardon.

The secretary of state in Arizona is the state's top election officer.

Incumbent Ken Bennett is running for the Republican nomination for governor.
