Judge's shift to federal bench creates opening

PHOENIX - An Arizona judge's appointment to a federal District Court seat creates an opening on the Maricopa County Superior Court bench.

Judge Douglas Rayes was among six new federal judges for Arizona whose appointments by President Barack Obama were confirmed last week by the U.S. Senate.

A state commission on trial court appointments will review applications for the Superior Court vacancy and recommend at least three nominees to Governor Jan Brewer, who will appoint the new judge.

The new judge will be paid $145,000 annually.

Applicants must be at least 30 years old, admitted to practice law in Arizona, a resident of Arizona for the past five years, and a resident of Maricopa County for the past year.
