Anascorp , a serum used to treat scorpion stings, can cost about $12,000 per dose. Some patients may need multiple doses, forcing the total costs to reach about $50,000.

The same serum is available across the border for about $100. Prices are marked up locally to compensate for the costs of covering the uninsured.
