PHOENIX - People protect their skin for health and beauty reasons, but if you're living in the following 20 cities you may have to try harder to avoid skin damage.
A study by RoC Skincare and Sperling's Best Places lists the top cities in the U.S. where a residen's' skin is at the highest risk for skin damage like fine lines, wrinkles and cancer.
Riverside, New York, Philadelphia and Atlanta landed in the top four spots. Sunny tourist spots like Los Angeles and Phoenix were at the bottom of the top 20.
To list, cities were ranked by the amount of damage caused by resident's lifestyle, commute time, stress levels, and environmental and occupational factors.
The sun shines 27 percent more in Riverside, Calif. than the national average, and it's pollution, dryness and 31.2 minute one-way commute landed the city in the number one spot. New York's 37.1 minute one-way commute along with its cold winter temperatures, traffic pollutants and its residents' lack of sleep landed the Big Apple in the number two spot.
Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale, Ariz. were listed as number 19 on the top 20 because the cities have "the most punishing climate for skin care", according to the study. Skin cancer is 35 percent higher in Phoenix than the average with 299 sunny days annually and the hottest July temperatures with an average of 104.5 F.
