Gov. Brewer's OK provides go-ahead for WWII memorial

PHOENIX - Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett says Gov. Jan Brewer's signing of a bill provides a go-ahead for a planned new World War II memorial.

The memorial will be located in Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza at the Capitol in Phoenix.

Its signature feature is to be two surplus naval guns -- one originally intended for the USS Arizona and one from the USS Missouri.

The Arizona was sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor at the opening of America's involvement in the war, while the Missouri was the site of the Japanese surrender ceremony that ended the war.

Bennett's office says the estimated cost of the privately funded memorial is $500,000 but that corporate donations of services are expected to cover significant portions of the work.
