More than 800 cats and dogs are currently at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control shelters, so they're offering free pet adoptions this weekend.

On Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22, dogs over six months old and all cats will have waived adoption fees. The shelter will also be open an extra hour on Friday.

Utah-based Best Friends Animal Society is fronting the cost for the adoptions to help clear out the shelters and get shelter pets loving homes.

MCACC said that as of Wednesday, the shelters are full with an occupancy of 865 animals, compared to 656 on the same day in 2016.

In the first 18 days of April 2017, MCACC put down 135 animals, which they say is 59 fewer animals than last year.

If you are interested in adopting, both shelters will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The West shelter is located at 2500 N. 27th Ave. in Phoenix and the East shelter is located at 2630 W. Rio Salado Pkwy. in Mesa.
