PHOENIX - A firefighter was injured while battling a blaze at a West Phoenix home.
Phoenix fire Capt. Josh Segebarth said the fire captain suffered second and third degree burns to his hand. The injured crew member was taken to the Maricopa County Medical Center Burn Unit.
Fire spokesman Jonathan Jacobs said the firefighter was injured in a "flash-type" incident when firefighters opened a hole to the house to pour water onto the fire.
The fire started in the vacant house near 55th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard early Thursday morning.
Segebarth said the fire appears to have started in the garage which was fully involved when the first crews arrived. The fire spread into the house, getting into the kitchen area.
Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the house.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
