Fire sends up thick plume of smoke from Phoenix auto shops

PHOENIX - A thick plume of smoke rose from a fire that ignited at an auto shop in east Phoenix early Sunday evening.

Firefighters responded to the shop near 36th and Van Buren streets around 5:15 p.m.

In a photo from the scene, flames could be seen pouring from the roof of the building.

Phoenix fire Capt. Tony Mure said crews faced windy conditions and the fire spread to another auto shop to the east.

The fire was upgraded to a first alarm to bring out extra crews and equipment.

Mure said at one point the roof of one of the buildings started caving in with firefighters on the roof.

All crews got off the roof safely, according to Mure. He added one firefighter received a minor injury.

Mure said both businesses, Sabrina Tire and Auto Center and All State Tire Shop, were lost in the fire.

Investigators are on the scene working to determine the cause of the fire.
